ABOUT ME
I draw every day (or almost every day). I paint. I sew. I cut. I stitch. I make artist books and art quilts, thread paintings, stitched vessels and collage in both fabric and paper. I deconstruct. I re-mix. I think and learn and remember with my hands. My hands tell me what is important.
I have been an exhibiting artist since 2004, starting with art quilts, and later expanding to books, vessels and collage. I live in NYC with my partner, David, and my (mature) dog, Penny.
ABOUT THE WORK:
My work is abstract, layered, pieced, fragmented, tactile. It’s about memories, secrets, time, repetition, expressive lines, marks and meanderings, meditative and obsessive stitching. I may incorporate text (often illegible) as a texture or design element. The pieces are intimate, small in scale, but bold. People, places, adventures, far away spaces, remembrances and emotional valences emerge in the layered textures. All beckon to be touched.
ABOUT MY PROCESS:
I start by creating the materials I will work with – be it paper or fabric. I dye, stamp, paint and overpaint. Using my home printer, I print manipulated photographs on cotton, silk, organza, or linen. I am a mark-maker, creating all kinds of textures, lines, shapes and colors on a variety of textured papers. With materials in hand, I begin.
