Shatzi Weisberger (1930-2022) was a radical.. She was also a neighbor, comrade, and
friend. She rightfully called herself a “death educator.” Shatzi called her last few weeks “the best time of her life.” It was during that time I asked her if I could incorporate her notes and trinkets into a series of embroideries. She said yes.
Materials used: Shatzi’s notes from lectures and classes, datebook entries, phone numbers,
addresses, as well as caregivers’ notes on medications, visits, sleep and daily schedules, printed on organza and cotton / Charms, shells, feathers, earrings, and beads left in a small jewelry box / My own hand-dyed and hand-painted fabric fragments – remnants from earlier work./ Twigs from our neighborhood./ And, of course, threads and embroidery floss.
